Everyone deserves due process, even and especially those we don’t agree with

If you have been trained well as a reporter, you know that one of your foremost responsibilities is to nail down the facts of a story before you go public with it. Another is that you set aside your personal opinions and operate only in service of the truth, whatever it turns out to be.

As a journalism major who worked as a reporter for four years on my college newspaper and spent the following decade as a reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, I know the rules and the importance of upholding them.

Apparently, much of the media assigned to cover the New York City mayor’s race did not.

Let me back up.

There are many Democrats who would like to be elected to N.Y.C.’s top job. One of them is Scott Stringer.

Say what you will about Stringer. He’s nebbishy, nerdy, creepy. Regardless of what you think of his politics or personality, there’s no doubt he’s qualified to be mayor of the most populous city in the United States.
