Lessons from the Cuomo scandal
Last year, around this time, many people across the country — including me — were going nuts for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Such leadership ability. Such strength of character. This guy should run for President.
Well, that’s over.
The 165-page report released this week by the State Attorney General’s office detailing Cuomo’s scumbaggery made sure of that.
But let’s not talk about him. I want to talk about women.
In particular, I want to talk about the call, as this scandal unfolds, to put more women in positions of power as a way to guard against future Cuomos.
I have no problem with increasing the number of women in positions of power.
What I do have a problem with is the assumption that simply because someone is a woman she’s going to be good to other women.
In Thursday’s New York Times, Gail Collins writes, “Sexual harassment can happen almost anywhere, but to control it, it generally helps to have both genders in the power structure.”
But not always, right?
There were women in Cuomo’s inner circle and that didn’t really help.
